One of the things that I find perplexing when reviewing papers is seeing a word spelled differently in the same paper. Sometimes in the same paragraph. I’m not talking about typos, I’m talking about an inability to settle on a single spelling of a word. In science we occasionally have the fun of making up words and, especially, of using words that spell check has no hope with, and this requires us to be vigilant In the way we spell.

When I review a paper, I take note of the spelling of words as I go and make sure that it stays consistent across the paper. I also check to see if it is consistent wih the spellings found in the literature. It only takes a few minutes to avoid looking careless to a reviewer, so check your spelling.
